The Melrose Cultural Council is part of a grass-roots network of 329 local councils that serve every city and town in the Commonwealth. The program is the largest, most decentralized one of its kind in the United States.
Each year, the state legislature provides an annual appropriation to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, which then allocates funds to each local council. This year, the Melrose Cultural Council will distribute about $7,000 in grants to support a variety of artistic and scientific projects and activities in Melrose – including exhibits, concerts, festivals, artist residencies, performances, workshops, and lectures.
Members of the Melrose Cultural Council are appointed by the Mayor, at the request of the Chair of the Council. Membership on the MCC is open to anyone interested in participating.
Recipients of MCC grants are not precluded from sitting on the Council. They are, however, bound by conflict of interest regulations and may not vote on grants for their own activities.
The 2010-2011 Melrose Cultural Council includes artists, arts administrators, engineers, public relations specialists, teachers, financial experts, and citizens interested in fostering the arts in the Melrose community.
